What is a Jewelry Chaton?

What is a Jewelry Chaton?

The world of jewelry encompasses a myriad of elements that sometimes escape us. It is not uncommon when browsing jewelry pieces, either online or in stores, to find names that are familiar to us but we do not know for sure what they are. Carat, ear jacket, chaton, or choke are some of the examples that Planderful will answer.

Although you may have heard of the chaton, you may not know very well how important is this piece of jewelry in our favorite accessories. What we can guarantee is that it is used much more than you could imagine. It is present in necklaces, earrings, rings... and this feature is very fashionable in any type of jewelry!

So, if you've come this far wondering what a chaton is, here we explain it to you.

The meaning

A chaton is a type of setting that is characterized by the way the gemstone is attached to the jewelry. In this setting, also known as the bezel setting, the metal surrounds a large part of the gemstone, leaving only the upper part visible.

It is a very elegant and sophisticated type of adornment from France that has been used for many years. In fact, "chaton" is a word that comes from French, and refers to its box shape. This type of setting refers to a way of attaching stones to chains without any attachment. We could say that it is a type of soldering that allows the chain and the detail to be joined in a clean way.

The chaton or bezel setting is perfect for jewelry that is used with continuity since it partially covers the diamond or gemstone, securing it perfectly and giving it a unique aesthetic. For this reason, it is the most commonly used setting for solitaire rings. With this setting, the gemstone is completely enveloped in precious metal. The lower part is open for maximum light reflection and is often combined with a brilliant gemstone ring. It is best suited for round and oval gemstones. The stone will appear larger and will be better protected with the bezel setting.

However, chaton in recent years is also present in different types of jewelry, and at Planderful we have all the options. It should be noted that the chaton is not only one of the most used settings, but the chaton is one of the safest settings in the jewelry market, so it is very likely that you have this type of setting in your jewelry box. The bezel setting and its distinctive lace-like fashion result in timeless and versatile jewelry, suitable for any occasion.

Chaton-set jewelry

Chaton-set jewelry should not be missing from your jewelry box, as it is a symbol of quality and long-lasting jewelry, a jewel for life. In addition, this type of setting brings a lot of elegance and sophistication to the jewel because its weights are hidden thanks to the chaton system.

And we want to tell you that the chaton in your jewelry can be what gives identity to the accessory, regardless of whether you wear it with diamonds, sapphires, rubies, or the gemstone of your choice. The right color of the metal enhances the brilliance and tone of the stone that accompanies it. Don't neglect it!

Always keep a space for the chaton in your jewelry box because you will use it a lot, we assure you. In our online store, you will find a huge variety of jewelry designed with this setting. Take your time, take a look at the accessories with which it can accompany, and... join the trend of beveled jewelry!

Different types of chatons in rings

-Open chaton

Open chaton means that the stone is set in a pierced metal and receives the light from the reverse side. Basically, the light rays also hit the back or side of the stone, which is embedded in a metal circle, if the stone is round. For this, the stone should be especially transparent. In this way, light can pass through the stone and be reflected on the outside.

The advantage of this type of processing is that the stone is brighter, as it also receives light rays from the lower surface. On the other hand, the jeweler's work must be done very carefully, to prevent the stone from accidentally slipping out of the metal.

-Closed mouthpiece

The setting is obviously the opposite of the semi-bezel setting. It is used, in fact, when the stone mounted in the jewelry is not particularly transparent and therefore does not need to let light pass through it. With this setting, the stone casing is closed, with a metal base on which the stone rests. It is also the most common setting case, especially in jewelry using semi-precious stones.

-Pavé

When so many small stones are placed side by side, so many that it is difficult to see the metal that contains them, a pavé is obtained: it can be limited to a row or cover the entire surface of the jewel. The pavé can surround a larger stone, thus creating a bezel that is formed from other gems instead of metal.

-Riviére

The setting of this type is formed by a row of gems, almost always brilliant-cut diamonds, which are arranged in a straight line: again with little metal visible. Unlike the classic riviére used, for example, for necklaces, in this type of setting the stones do not always have a scalar dimension. In other words, all stones of the same size are used.

How to combine it

It is very easy to achieve a trendy yet elegant look when you combine it with a piece of jewelry. For example, earrings with this type of bevel and a piercing at the same time, or a chaton ring with a bracelet of different diamonds... dare to be a breaker on any day of the week!

We want to inspire you to let your imagination fly and only propose one rule: wear the look you like the most. Mixing jewelry such as chaton earrings with other types of piercings, create timeless ear looks with a touch of trend. In Planderful we propose you play with the most eccentric gems and bet on the harmonious game created by earrings with piercings.

Remember: Pieces with this type of setting have the ability to become a timeless basic and create the most elegant looks. It all depends on the approach you want to give it.

Take a chance on this new trend!
